Help Mike Shoreman Raise Funds For Youth Mental Health

& help him dispel myths about people with different abilities.

The Crossing:

New York to Canada.

What is The Crossing?

There is an 87 mile open water stretch between Rochester, New York and Toronto, Ontario. Mike Shoreman, the Unbalanced Paddleboarder, has committed to crossing this stretch of Lake Ontario on a paddle board on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of August and it will take Mike an estimated 3 days. It is estimated to take Mike 30 hours over a period of two days of paddle boarding with the support of two support teams, the Toronto Police Marine Unit, and Gudrun Hardes - a paddle boarding expert who will be with Mike on the water.

A challenging feat for most, this will be the first time that the crossing of Lake Ontario will be done from Rochester to Toronto and by a person with a physical disability.

Mike has a neurological condition that causes dizziness, vertigo and balance problems, and hopes that his attempt to cross Lake Ontario on a paddleboard will help to dispel myths about people with different abilities. Mike wants to inspire those who have faced mental health struggles and people with different abilities to dream big, set big goals and work to achieve them.

Can you help by donating at least $5 and share this fundraiser? We are also asking individuals to rally their friends, family, and networks to support Mike's effort by becoming a fundraiser. Who is Mike Shoreman?

Mike is a former paddle boarding coach with Paddle Canada. In 2018 Mike was diagnosed with a neurological condition called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. A chronic condition causing his face to collapse on the right side, hearing impairments, speech problems and he lost his sense of balance ending his professional paddle boarding career. Mike experienced a significant mental health journey in the months that followed and months of physiotherapy retraining his brain to walk normally again. Doctors said it wasn't possible for him to get on the board again. Though Mike still experiences struggles daily with exhaustion and dizziness, he is back on a board, reclaiming his identity and building his confidence back up.

"Dizziness, Vertigo and Exhaustion will be the biggest challenge but I owe it to the people who will come after me who will do this in future years to show them that this is possible."

Mike Shoreman is a speaker, author, athlete and community leader. He is the winner of Canada's largest inspirational speaking competition and the winner of the 2020/2021 Stand Up Paddleboarding Man of The Year Award. The first Canadian and person with a disability to take home this award. He is a passionate mental health advocate and a partner in Jack.org's youth mental health revolution. For more information on Mike you can find him at www.mikeshoreman.org

Who is Gudrun Hardes?

Gudrun Hardes is a community builder, a mental health advocate and a paddle boarding expert! She is the founder of WSUP Toronto teaching fitness and paddle boarding to the Toronto community. She was one of the biggest supports Mike had in returning to the water, and she will paddle with him in this phenomenal challenge to bring awareness to mental health.
